Thanks Frankie. I think that regardless of what kind of story we're telling or world we're building, it needs to be believable. I'm seeing so many people applaud this show...oddly enough, A LOT of white folks and even some Asian folks, but as someone who has spent the last few years on the social justice front fighting for change and telling stories of oppression, it was hard for me to ignore certain things. Additionally, as a young girl, Historical Romances were my escapism of choice, and seeing it brought to life in a way that just glosses over certain hard aspects really felt unsettling. Race is one thing, but the rape scene was another and it's surprising and shocking to me that on all of these forums that are raving about Bridgerton, that so many women (especially) lose the fact that Simon was essentially raped by Daphne. In a removed way, it's an interesting study on western society and attitudes on things like rape by women on men. It does not get enough attention and people don't even recognize it when they see it, which is a shame.
